Projekt shortname: PRC-01-06
Time frame: 04/2005 - 08/2005
Country: China
Client: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH
While in the past incineration was the only officially accepted treatment method for HCW, meanwhile the responsible State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) allowed to use in pilot projects alternative treatment technologies, mainly autoclaves. These so called "Non-Incineration" technologies have been and are operated economical and ecological beneficial in most of the member countries of the EC, in the US, in Canada, as well as in dozens of other countries world wide. Until the beginning of 2005, these technologies are however still not officially approved as appropriate for the HCW treatment in China. Accordingly, no standards and alternative treatment technologies are set up.
It was the objective of the project to provide SEPA with technical assistance for formulating the technical & management guidance for the treatment of HCW by using autoclave or other non-incineration technologies. As the outcome of the project, the guidance will be integrated into the Technical Code for Centralized Treatment of Healthcare Waste, to be amended in 2005.
