Cost effective, integrated management of the healthcare waste streams in the rural environment through centralization of healthcare waste treatment facilities on district level.The project assisted the Zeerust Health District in the North-West Province and the National Department of Environment, Agriculture and Tourism (DEAT) to develop and implement an Integrated Healthcare Waste Management Concept. The target was to set up a cost effective, integrated management system for the healthcare waste streams in the rural environment through centralization of healthcare waste treatment facilities on district level.
This project got approved as a National Waste Management Strategy (NWMS) Project by the DEAT in Pretoria. It is a component of the NWMS project to cover the full healthcare waste stream from cradle to grave. An integrated healthcare waste management system was established around the treatment technology to provide centralized healthcare waste management services. The project aims to demonstrate the developed solution for rural areas and to spread the approved system on national level.
