The GTZ and KfW supported TC/FC cooperation project “Improvement of waste management services, Erzurum” focused on the institutional, organizational, technical and financial improvement of waste management services in the Metropolitan Municipality of Erzurum. Besides domestic waste management, collection, intermediate storage, transport and treatment/disposal of healthcare waste from Erzurum’s public and private health institutions/facilities were among the key issues of the project activities. According on the provisions of the operating permit for the new sanitary landfill, only pre-treated healthcare waste was allowed to be finally disposed of at the landfill. A tailor-made logistic and treatment system was designed and established to cope with these preconditions. Of special relevance for the successful operation of the new healthcare waste treatment plant was the introduction of sound waste management practices at the waste generator level (healthcare facilities), as well as support of the future operator of the treatment plant and the logistic system. It was recommended to employ fully responsible “healthcare waste officers” in the hospitals and to carry out – besides training-on-the-job - several training modules with administrative and technical staff of the hospitals and with the operators of the treatment plant.
