Project description:
The GTZ-KfW Health Sector Support Programme (HSSP) Nepal provides technical assistance to the Government of Nepal, the programme purpose being, "Public health services in selected regions of Nepal are improved, and access to health care, particularly for the poor population, is safeguarded". This Programme embraced 9 districts, 5 zones and 3-development regions, of Nepal. Zonal Hospital, District Hospitals, Primary Health Centers, Health Posts and Sub Health Posts are covered.
The Health System in Nepal is run by private and governmental sources and is mainly divided into 7 different level of facilities.
Realizing that the inadequate physical infrastructure of health facilities impeded the development of the district health system, KfW procured a Start-up fund in 2001. The fund was administered by GTZ-HSSP, and was intended for small infrastructure measures, such as urgent repairs, rehabilitation of buildings, and procurement of medical equipment and essential supplies. Medical waste management and the relevant infrastructure have turned out to be a crucial element in achieving the programme's aims.

Services provided by ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics:
In coordination with the GTZ Construction Department and the HSSP team, ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics GmbH carried out the following activities:
Management of Healthcare Waste:
- 10 healthcare facilities of different treatment level – operated by Nepal government, private Organization and NGO were visited;
- Analysis of the Management Practices
- Organization
- Logistic
- Healthcare Facilities with incinerator
- Healtcare Facilities without waste treatment system
- Healthcare Facilities with autoclaving system
Technical Assessment of Treatment and Disposal Facilities:
- Waste Treatment Technologies: During the visit of ETLog Health 8 different incinerators have been analysed;
- Chemical Disinfection: ETLog Health visited and analysed several Waste Disposal Facilities;
- Provided guidance and recommendations for appropriate operation and maintenance of the chosen and applied waste treatment technology;
- Recommended necessary improvements to HSSP practices on medical waste treatment;
- Workshop on Health Care Waste issues, presentation of developed strategies, discussion on implementation issues with relevant stakeholders of the MOHP and all target districts;
